By diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal disorders (via manual spinal adjustments and other approaches) Doctors of Chiropractic offer a natural approach to improving nervous system function, reducing pain, increasing mobility, and supporting the body’s innate ability to heal itself.
At SCU, we’ve been pioneers in chiropractic medicine for more than 110 years. Founded in 1911 as the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC), we were one of the nation’s very first chiropractic colleges, challenging convention and advancing the profession long before it was widely known or accepted. Today, LACC is one of several colleges within Southern California University of Health Sciences and continues to be a leader in chiropractic medicine and healthcare transformation.
Success after graduation requires more than strong clinical skills; it requires business know-how. Through a series of coursework on private practice development, risk mitigation, coding & billing, and more, you’ll gain invaluable, practical skills for establishing, operating, and sustaining a successful practice and career.
At SCU, we offer students an extensive range of clinical training experiences that build both comprehensive clinical skills and standout resumes. While many institutions limit students to working in university health clinics that primarily serve other students, we offer something different. You’ll begin your real-world training at SCU Health Clinics which are open to the community year-round, accept commercial insurance, and serve more than 40,000 diverse patients annually. After completing those rotations, you’ll have the chance to broaden your clinical skills at various partner sites across California and beyond. SCU collaborates with more than 500 private practices specializing in fields like pediatrics, sports medicine, integrative medicine, and functional medicine, in addition to Veterans’ Health Administration (VA) hospitals, renowned teaching hospitals, Division 1 athletic programs, Federally Qualified Health Centers, and Hispanic-serving community clinics.
As an SCU chiropractic student, you’ll have the opportunity to focus in the areas that interest you most, through elective coursework paths in Sports Medicine, Eastern Medicine, Functional Medicine, Chiropractic Techniques, Business, and much more. In addition, you’ll have the option to earn two doctorates (Doctor of Chiropractic and Doctor of Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine) through our dual-degree track, saving both time and money.
One of our most popular degree customizations, our Sports Medicine emphasis will prepare you to work with wide-ranging athletes from amateur to professional. You’ll gain expertise from experienced faculty in the Sports medicine field, and train at SCU’s Human Performance Optimization Center (HPO) under the mentorship of practitioner faculty from the sports medicine industry. You will also work in diverse athletic settings like marathons, triathlons, endurance cycling races, weightlifting competitions, international taekwondo competitions, high school and college athletic departments, and more.
At SCU, you won’t learn anatomy solely through textbooks and technology. You’ll have the powerful opportunity to learn in our cadaver lab—a classic teaching method offering unparalleled insight into the shape, feel, and function of the body. During this awe-inspiring experience, you’ll examine and dissect real human tissues and structures, gaining an understanding of human anatomy that is simply not possible through textbooks and virtual models alone.
Chiropractic colleges tend to fall into (or lean toward) one of two approaches: evidence-based or philosophically-based. SCU takes an evidence-based approach, emphasizing research, clinical trials, and integrating chiropractic care with modern scientific practices. We believe this not only equips you to achieve superior patient outcomes but also prepares you to communicate and collaborate more effectively with conventional healthcare professionals.
In addition to classroom lessons and hands-on clinical training, we support your learning through advanced teaching technology including:
Most of today’s healthcare colleges offer an “interprofessional education” through which students learn with, from, and about other disciplines. But at SCU, our Interprofessional Education is broader and, frankly, we think that makes it better. Unlike other colleges, we teach you about both conventional and complementary disciplines—not just one or the other—because we believe in both and we teach both, all under one roof.
All too often, healthcare providers “stay in their lanes” rather than building comprehensive care plans that include other disciplines, professionals, and approaches. In addition, they look strictly at the physical body as opposed to all the factors that may be influencing a patient’s health and well-being—genetics, lifestyle, mental health, relationships, physical environments, community support, and beyond. But at SCU, no matter what program you are in, you’ll learn to blend the best of conventional and complementary approaches (integrative healthcare) and to treat the entire mind, body, and spirit (whole health)—for true lasting wellness.
SCU’s Doctor of Chiropractic program teaches an evidence-based, whole-person approach to practice. Our University-wide commitment to Interprofessional Education sets our program apart. Our innovative curriculum is built around interprofessional collaboration so you can gain both essential clinical skills and vital new perspectives to advance your career. SCU offers the Doctor of Chiropractic program in two options: 10 and 12 terms. Students admitted through Pathway 3 are automatically enrolled in the 12-term curriculum track, and cannot switch to the 10-term curriculum track. All other students are enrolled in the 10-term curriculum track (Pathway 1 and 2) by default.

In compliance with 34 CFR 668.43, the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC) at SCU provides information pertaining to professional licensure for the Doctor of Chiropractic program. Students should refer to the information below and contact the appropriate licensing board to ensure they will meet the licensure requirements in the state(s) in which they intend to practice upon graduation. LACC’s Doctor of Chiropractic program meets the educational requirements for licensure in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Some states have requirements in addition to educational requirements. Prospective and enrolled students are encouraged to research licensure requirements for the state in which they intend to practice. Licensure requirements vary from state to state.
Neither acceptance for admission into the program nor the subsequent earning of a Doctor of Chiropractic degree guarantees that a state or foreign country will grant a graduate a license to practice chiropractic. Each state and foreign country, through its legislative and administrative process, defines the standards of competency and scope of practice of chiropractic within its jurisdiction. For further information on each of the jurisdictions, please visit the Official Directory of the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Board.
Please note that licensure requirements are always subject to change. Although SCU will confirm the licensure requirements on a routine basis, we strongly recommend that you inquire with the licensing agency to confirm that you understand and will meet the requirements for licensure before enrolling in your program of choice. Additionally, while progressing through the program, we recommend that you check licensing agency requirements regularly to monitor whether they have changed in a manner that impacts your licensure plans.
The following states require students to have a bachelor’s degree, in addition to a D.C. degree, to obtain a license:
Curriculum Meets Licensure Requirements | Curriculum Does Not Meet Licensure Requirements | Unknown/Cannot Be Confirmed as Meeting |
Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island*, South Dakota, Tennessee, West Virginia*, Wisconsin | None |
In states above indicated with an asterisk (*) – students must have completed a bachelor’s degree prior to matriculating into the D.C. program.
State Licensure and Pre-chiropractic Education Requirement Resources:
All international students are strongly encouraged to check the credentialing requirements in the country where they intend to practice.
The following table provides the overall average of the two most recent year’s graduation rates, calculated at 150% of the normal completion time. LACC graduation rates have been consistently above the Council on Chiropractic Education threshold of 70%.

Some of my favorite courses at SCU have to be the chiropractic procedure classes; those are the classes you get to hone in on your chiro skills, your palpation skills and ultimately work on the adjustments that make you a chiropractor. Those are the classes I feel enhance my knowledge the most and are some of the reasons I chose to become a chiropractor here are SCU.
The student body at SCU is unique. Everyone is open-minded and willing to talk to you and help you out. I love that I have found my main group of friends who have become my life support. I am also in numerous clubs, which have helped with networking and support; a great community to be a part of.
"I wanted to become a chiropractor after sitting in on a chiropractor lecture. Everything clicked, and I knew this was what I wanted to do. I came from a background where I wasn't a good student; I was at a low point, but SCU gave me a chance. I received help, support, resources, and tutoring. I now have the skills to succeed as a chiropractic student and as a leader on campus."
Doctor of Chiropractic faculty, Dr. Sermeno, ensures you understand [the material] to the best of your ability. If he is presenting in a way you do not understand, he will present it differently so you can understand. I appreciate that. He is also in practice and brings that knowledge to the classroom, so we have an idea of what is happening in clinics and have real-life examples to learn from."
If you have 90 undergraduate credits or more and meet other admission standards, you are eligible for the Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) program. Students who do not meet the 90 credits can enroll in the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences Chiropractic Sciences Concentration which only requires 57 credits and provides another pathway to the DC program.

The campus is located at 16200 Amber Valley Drive Whittier, CA 90604.
March is National Nutrition Month, which promotes the importance of making informed food choices and developing healthy eating habits. Along with a balanced diet, taking vitamins and supplements can also improve overall health. While there are many options available, if I could only choose three, they would be Omega 3 fish oil, Vitamin D, and Magnesium. These three vitamins offer a range of benefits, from improving brain function to reducing inflammation and supporting bone health.
Southern Californians can receive free Chiropractic Care and have their vitals checked by a physician assistant at an upcoming SCU Health Tent Event community outreach clinic in East Whittier. You may have seen strips of colorful tape across the arms, legs, and other body parts of Olympic athletes to high school players. With the launch of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar, we’ll be seeing many world-class professional athletes across 32 global teams wearing this tape throughout November and December. The tape is called Kinesiology Tape, and some refer to it simply as KT. We had Dr. Fanning give a lesson in Kinesiology Tape 101.

The Force Sensing Table Technology Lab helps enhance student training, expedite assessment of manual therapy skills, and improve treatment for patients. SCU’s FSTT Lab improves clinician training by providing instant analytical information to students, something that cannot be directly measured from human patients.
The force sensing technology is built into the tables, allowing students to practice adjustments on people, or practice on mannequins.
The FSTTs are tools for chiropractic students to take advantage of and learn early on, where they need to develop. The FSTT shows students where they excel, and where they need to focus more attention. It shows them their speed, pre-load tension, if they recoil (meaning lose pre-adjustive tension) during the thrust, how much force they are delivering, their line of drive, among several other types of helpful feedback. The FSTT Lab helps students create good habits early on in their adjusting careers, which will make them better adjusters, as future chiropractors. This tool has the ability to give students the confidence they need to deliver the best care, through proper, effective adjustments.
For students seeking career flexibility and increased earning potential, SCU offers a combined Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) and Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine (DAcCHM) pathway. This dual-degree program allows chiropractors to broaden their practice and enhance their revenue opportunities. By pursuing both degrees, students can complete their studies in as little as 5 years and 4 months, reducing their time to completion by up to 16 months and saving up to $30,750 in tuition.
Students begin with the Doctor of Chiropractic program and include Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine courses as part of their DC Selectives. These courses are applicable to the DAcCHM degree. One term before starting DC clinical training, students apply for admission to the DAcCHM program, transferring approximately 40% of the DAcCHM credits earned. During the DC clinical training phase, students will simultaneously begin their DAcCHM program. After completing the DC degree, students will need just two additional years to finish the DAcCHM degree, allowing them to earn both doctoral degrees in as little as 5 years and 4 months.
By enrolling in the dual pathway, students can complete two professional doctoral degrees in as little as 5 years and 4 months, compared to the 7 years typically required if pursuing the degrees separately. SCU’s innovative approach allows DC students to start the DAcCHM program during their DC clinical studies, usually around the middle of the third year (Term 8). Students can receive up to 75 transfer credits from their DC coursework (53 credits) and Selectives (22 credits) towards the DAcCHM program, covering nearly 40% of the DAcCHM curriculum. This integration can result in savings of up to $30,750 in tuition.
While the DAcCHM is the recommended dual-degree pathway, students may opt to apply to the Master of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine (MAcCHM) program instead, which is one term shorter, potentially reducing completion time by up to four months. Financial aid and scholarships are typically available for students enrolled in both programs.
Students accepted into the Doctor of Chiropractic program need to apply to the Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine program one term before they start clinical education. Applicants must meet the admissions requirements for the DAcCHM program.
