Sira Borges graduated in Medicine from Bahia School of Medicine and Public Health in Salvador, Bahia, in 1971, and in Chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa in 1990. She was the third chiropractor in Brazil and the first woman.
Sira was the founder and president of the ABQ – Brazilian Chiropractic Association (1992 -2002) and a leader responsible for the development of Brazil’s first two chiropractic programs, at FEEVALE University in Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul, and Anhembi Morumbi University in São Paulo (1995 – 2002). She was also the coordinator of the Pro-Regulatory Commission for Chiropractic in Brazil – CPRQB (2006-2010).
Since 2006 she has served as the Executive Director of the Latin American Chiropractic Federation (FLAQ) and since 2002 has been the Latin American representative of the IBCE (International Board of Chiropractic Examiners). Her many awards include the World Federation of Chiropractic Honor Award for outstanding contributions to the international development of the profession (2011), the Brazilian Association of Chiropractic Service Award from the Brazilian Chiropractic Association – ABQ (2012), the Lee Homewood Outstanding Pioneer Award from the Association for the History of Chiropractic (2015) and a Fellowship from the Palmer College of Chiropractic (2017).
