In addition, you will participate in exciting, real-world sports and integrated healthcare settings, providing care for all levels of athletes from high school to world-class professionals. Residents selected for rotations with professional teams will travel throughout the U.S. and abroad.
Get the advanced clinical experience to become a board-certified Doctor of Chiropractic in Sports Medicine through a two-year residency program. Upon completion, you will be eligible to sit for the Diplomate examination of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (ACBSP).
The VA chiropractic residency program focuses on Integrated Clinical Practice, with training emphasizing the provision of chiropractic care in an integrated healthcare system, collaborating with primary care Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACTs), specialty care, and other medical and associated health providers and trainees.
The residencies provide advanced clinical training in complex case management, allowing recent graduates to increase their scope and depth of clinical knowledge, experience, and acumen. Residents are mentored by senior VA chiropractors who are national leaders in integrated chiropractic practice. These clinicians share their expertise in patient care, academics, and research to provide a robust educational experience.

The Elevate Life Chiropractic Residency Program was developed through a combined effort and vision of Daniel Johns, D.C., FIAMA, CERT DN, and Erik Korzen, D.C., NASM-CES, PES. As the chiropractic profession expands, we realize there is a need for real-world experience and advanced learning that only comes from a true residency program. Our multi-disciplinary rotations include chiropractic, physical therapy, primary care and acupuncture.
The residency program is specifically tailored for recent graduates from a CCE-accredited chiropractic program and there is a competitive application process. We offer multi-disciplinary clinical rotations, approved certificates in specialty areas and support for scholarly activities. Additionally, we include leadership training and operational management skills. Our goal is to produce the best evidence-informed outpatient physical medicine providers with leadership skills unmatched by peers.
The 18-month residency program is separated into three distinct phases, each approximately six months in duration. Three grand round presentations, one formal case study, a learning portfolio and regular mentor sessions are all requirements of the program. To ensure residents competency in specific areas of patient care and clinical skills they will be assessed through multiple evaluations.

The Sports Medicine Clinical Division offers a two-year, full-time residency program that provides advanced clinical experience concentrated in sports medicine. Its mission is to develop board-certified doctors of chiropractic in the area of sports medicine and foster a culture of scholarly research that benefits the advancement of chiropractic through patient-centered evidence-based care.
Residents are mentored by senior sports medicine chiropractors that are known nationally and internationally for their expertise in the field. Residents follow a comprehensive syllabus, which provides for a variety of learning formats, clinical and field experience, academics, and scholarly research. Residents participate in a wide array of exciting real-world sports and integrated healthcare settings, providing care for all levels of athletes from high school to world-class professionals. Residents are selected on a competitive basis and openings are limited. The resident receives an annual stipend and health benefits. Upon completion of this program, a doctor of chiropractic is eligible to sit for the Diplomate examination of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (ACBSP).
Training will take place at the SCU campus in Whittier, California with multiple off-site rotations throughout Southern California. Residents selected for rotations with professional teams will travel throughout the United States and abroad. Off-site rotations will include team-based management of complex cases in collaboration with other medical specialists and healthcare providers. Residents will also engage in clinical educational rotations through services including pain management, surgical specialties, and rehabilitation disciplines. Additionally, residents will participate in various scholarly activities and will attend and give presentations at multiple academic/research venues.
Programs will be open to applicants who hold a DC degree from a CCE-accredited program. Applicants must have a current, full, active, and unrestricted chiropractic license in the state of California or be eligible to sit for the California board examination. Ideal candidates will be within 3 years of graduation.
The program is full-time consisting of a minimum of 55 hours per week with the additional weekly time needed for scholarly study and training activities. The program is broken down into two consecutive, one-year commitments, each with its own requirements for successful completion.
Residents are stipend employees of SCU and are compensated $47,476 per year. In addition to the stipend, residents receive up to $20,000 in educational benefits related to the curriculum. Residents receive paid Federal holidays. Residents are also eligible for life and health insurance. Residents will be protected from personal liability while providing professional services at SCU and malpractice insurance is provided through SCU.

A committee of program faculty including representation by the academic affiliate as appropriate will take part in the review of applications for all of the minimally acceptable candidates. The resident will ultimately be selected following an interview process for the most qualified candidates. Telephone interviews may be arranged in instances when a visit cannot be scheduled. The selected resident will receive a letter of appointment from SCU confirming the applicant’s acceptance of the position and providing information regarding the duration of the program, hours of attendance, and stipend. Applicants will be informed in writing of the decision of the committee.
