Raafat Yacoub, MD
Fall 1980 - Fall 2120
Assistant Professor
Current Position
Biography
Dr. Baheeg was born and raised in Egypt and earned his medical degree from Kasr El Aini School of Medicine, Cairo University, in 1984, followed by specialization and clinical experience in orthopedic surgery. His professional journey later expanded into several creative and educational fields, including piano, composition, music production, audio engineering and restoration, translation, and digital music technology. He has composed and produced music for Arabic Christian singers, groups, radio, and television and has produced twelve instrumental worship albums.
Dr. Baheeg immigrated to the United States with his family in 2005 to join a California-based nonprofit multinational outreach organization. In 2010, his passion for medicine was rekindled from a new perspective—biomedical science education. This allowed him to combine his medical background with his strengths in communication, creativity, learning, and teaching.
From 2011 to 2020, Dr. Baheeg taught anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical terminology, electrocardiography, and related biomedical sciences at West Coast Ultrasound Institute (WCUI), ultimately serving as Lead Medical Instructor and Regional Director of EKG Education. From 2014 to 2016, he also worked at USC Keck Hospital as an EKG technician, gaining contemporary clinical experience in electrocardiography and cardiac stress testing that he integrated into his teaching.
Dr. Baheeg first joined Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU) in 2021 as Biological Sciences Instructional Lead Faculty. He also taught biomedical sciences at Stanbridge University and, from 2022 through February 2024, served as full-time faculty and Co-Chair of Biomedical Sciences, where he developed and taught pathophysiology for Bachelor of Science in Nursing students.
In March 2024, Dr. Baheeg returned to SCU as full-time faculty in the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, where he currently serves as Assistant Professor. His primary teaching responsibilities include Human Physiology and other biomedical sciences within the Doctor of Chiropractic program. His teaching emphasizes conceptual understanding, clinical integration, active learning, and the development of physiological and pathophysiological reasoning rather than memorization of isolated facts.
His current academic interests include physiology and pathophysiology education, metabolic health, clinical reasoning, artificial intelligence in health-professions education, and innovative approaches to active learning. He is the creator and developer of pRoBe, an AI-guided Socratic clinical-reasoning system designed to engage student teams in real-time diagnostic reasoning while providing instructors with transcripts, analytics, and tools for evaluating the reasoning process. He is also actively involved in the development of SCU’s evolving Doctor of Chiropractic curriculum, including the integration of physiology, pathophysiology, clinical reasoning, and case-based learning.
Over approximately fifteen years of biomedical science education, Dr. Baheeg has continually refined a teaching philosophy built around clarity, intellectual curiosity, high academic expectations, respect, genuine care for students, and sustained support. He believes that students learn best when they are challenged seriously while also knowing that their instructor is personally invested in their growth and success. His approach seeks to create an environment in which students can ask questions, make mistakes, reason through difficult concepts, and progressively develop confidence in their own scientific thinking.
Dr. Baheeg believes that even complex biomedical concepts can become understandable when students are guided to see how mechanisms connect rather than being asked to memorize disconnected details. His overarching educational goal is to help future healthcare professionals develop the scientific understanding, clinical reasoning, intellectual discipline, and compassion necessary to improve the health and well-being of the patients they will eventually serve.
