Biography

Elizabeth (Bitsy) Recupero, DO, MPH, MEd is currently a primary care provider for the New Orleans VA Medical Center as well as a Clinical Champion and an Educational Champion for the National VA’s Office of Patient Centered Care and Cultural Transformation (OPCC&CT).

She attended medical school at Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine graduating in 1996. She went on to complete a dual residence in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, and she is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. After residency, she opened The Recuperative Center, a solo primary care practice that focused on Holistic Medicine in the town of Lambertville, New Jersey. It was during that time that she further enhanced her knowledge and skills in Integrative Medicine. Bitsy went on to complete the two-year Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona from 2007-2009.

In 2012, she left private practice to work for the VA. A move which also brought her back to her hometown of Boston, Massachusetts. In 2015, after distinguishing herself as an expert in Whole Health Clinical Care during Boston VA’s Whole Health pilot study, she became a Clinical Champion with OPCC&CT. She is currently working to promote and expand the VA’s practice of Whole Health Clinical Care in primary care clinics throughout the country. She created many of the Whole Health tools currently in use at Boston VA, developed many trainings in Whole Health for OPCC&CT, and works with providers throughout the VA Enterprise mentoring them in support of the Whole Health System. In May 2019, she transferred to New Orleans VA where she sees Veterans in Primary Care.

She received her Master of Public Health degree from Boston University School of Public Health in 2017, and her Master of Education degree with an emphasis in Instructional Design and adult learning theory from the University of Massachusetts in 2018. She is considered one of the leading subject matter experts in Whole Health Clinical Care and patient-centered care.
