Biography

Cadyn Cathers, PsyD (he/him) is part of the university faculty in SCU’s Reiss-Davis Doctor of Psychology in Psychodynamic Psychology program. 

Prior to joining SCU, Dr. Cathers was faculty at the Reiss-Davis Graduate School in Summer 2021, teaching primarily courses related to research methods, dissertation development, and psychodynamic theories. He has also taught at multiple other universities, including Alliant International University Los Angeles, Pacifica Graduate Institute, Antioch University Los Angeles, California State University Los Angeles, and Mount Saint Mary’s University. He served as the co-director of the LGBT Specialization at Antioch University Los Angeles for three yearsHis passion for teaching psychology inspired him to found The Affirmative Couch, a national continuing education provider for psychotherapists who are interested in the topic of sexuality and gender.  

Whether it is in education or the clinical field, Dr. Cathers is committed to facilitate growth and development so that people can live more authentic and fulfilling lives. As a licensed clinical psychologist in California, he established a group practice, Out Couch Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, specializing in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy with transgender and nonbinary adults (particularly in early coming out and transitioning), LGBTQIA identity development and growthand pre-verbal trauma in LGBTQIA communitiesDr. Cathers primarily works with a relational psychoanalytic perspective, and incorporates object relations, self-psychology, and attachment theory.  

Dr. Cathers’ research interests include quantitative methods, psychodynamic principles, transgender and gender nonbinary communities, sexuality, and clinical supervision.
