Dr. Annie Babikian Honored with the SCU Alumni of the Year Award

Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU) has always been proud of the exceptional achievements of its graduates and, this year, we were proud to announce Dr. Annie Babikian as the first recipient of our new SCU Alumni of the Year Whole Health Achievement Award. Dr. Babikian’s journey in healthcare reflects a steadfast commitment to improving lives through integrative, whole-person care—an approach that exemplifies SCU’s mission.

SCU President John Scaringe presented Dr. Babikian with the award, live on stage, at the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine (AIHM) First Annual Whole Health Conference this past October

Dr. Babikian is the Deputy Chief of The Chiropractic Section at the VA Palo Alto, California, where she has contributed to advancing whole health in patient care. Her approach focuses on understanding what truly matters to each patient, ensuring personalized and effective outcomes.

A Whole Health Leader

Dr. Babikian’s journey in healthcare reflects a steadfast commitment to improving lives through integrative, whole-health medicine. Her work exemplifies SCU’s mission to empower practitioners to transform healthcare through whole-person care.

“As a chiropractor, we work with primary care; we work with physical medicine; we work with emergency departments. So, from a whole health perspective and a whole health model, all these different integrative medicines work together to help elevate our patient’s experience and foster their success,” said Dr. Babikian.

“So really the whole health of what matters most to a patient, we’re able to do that here at the VA hospital. And where did it start? It started at SCU,” stated Dr. Babikian.

“By giving the right information, the right curriculum to really set that up for you to be able to have good patient care. SCU was the place.  Such a supporting and driving force through my entire career without the foundation of SCU. I don’t think I would have done what I do now if I didn’t have the right tools from SCU,” explained Dr. Babikian.

A Call to Serve

Inspired by a deep desire to serve, Dr. Babikian’s career path embodies a profound dedication to helping others. As she explained:

“For some, that path leads to philanthropy. For others, it’s faith and religion. And, like many of us, that path is patient care. For a very special group of people, it’s the call to serve our country. Regardless of our paths, our missions are the same—the selfless act of serving others.”

Dr. Babikian’s work at the VA highlights her commitment to serving veterans, ensuring they receive the highest level of care and support.

Gratitude and Wisdom

Dr. Babikian attributes her success to the education and preparation she received at SCU. She expressed her appreciation, saying:

“Thank you, SCU, for the exceptional preparation and training. The education and preparation for all the things that I’ve done has really prepared me to serve our country’s veterans at the highest level.”

Dr. Babikian also shared inspiring words from her late grandfather, Sergeant Alfred Castaneda of the United States Marine Corps:

“Constant vigilance is the password. Excellent to outstanding is the goal, for anything less would be unacceptable.”

Honoring Excellence in Whole Health

Dr. Babikian’s achievements represent SCU’s values and commitment to producing leaders in whole-person healthcare. Her career serves as an inspiration to the SCU community.
