SCU Making a World of Difference!

SCU thrives on the notion that healthcare is essential to changing the world. We are deeply committed to our mission of developing students into competent, and integrative practitioners who are making a world of difference as members of their communities and leaders in the future of integrative healthcare.

Our impact is not just here and now, nor is it bound to classrooms and clinics throughout greater Los Angeles. It extends across the world and well into the future as today’s students and alumni are prepared to lead the healthcare system of tomorrow.

The motivation for the Making a World of Difference campaign and how it relates to SCU’s mission is detailed in SCU Launches “Making a World of Difference” Campaign.

Integrative, Team-based, and Collaborative Care

Part of our mission is to help students learn to excel in a team-based, collaborative environment that has become the model of quality and efficiency in today’s healthcare delivery system.

Health Creation and Lifestyle Medicine

As we’re creating the healthcare system of the future, we do it by creating health – not just through disease management. We emphasize patient-centered care and integrative medicine through healthy living and lifestyle medicine.

Interprofessional Education

SCU students are not educated in silos – they learn from, with, and about each other’s professions throughout each program. Students are engaged in deep learning side by side with other future health practitioners starting with their first class. This continues throughout the curriculum and into the clinical experience and training.

When different professions bring the best of what is needed for the patient it results in better outcomes at lower costs.

Being immersed in learning with other medical disciplines prepares students to work in and lead healthcare teams. Our hope for graduates is they become passionate innovators who make a world of difference changing healthcare one patient, one practice, one community at a time.

Holistic Medicine & Health Creation

At SCU, we focus on what makes human beings thrive. We teach our students to restore patients to health by focusing on the root causes of illness. In doing so, we consider lifestyle and environment as a whole, and we invest in the promotion of health, good nutrition, and positive relationships.

Deeply Engaged Leadership

SCU works closely with Integrative Health Organizations to stay abreast of the ever-changing integrative healthcare landscape. Through event sponsorships, staff involvement at conferences and symposiums, and Board and committee appointments—SCU’s leadership is deeply engaged with integrative health organizations.

Bridge to Traditional Healthcare

Through innovative initiatives such as our Primary Spine Care collaboration with Dartmouth and sports medicine collaboration with SCU Faculty member, Dr. Bill Moreau (Director of Sports Medicine, USOC)—to our continuing education offerings, including Ayurveda courses for M.D.’s— SCU is building bridges to traditional healthcare.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Partnership

SCU’s groundbreaking spine care partnership with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) offers an innovative and integrative approach to the treatment of spine-related injuries and promises higher value, more cost-effective, patient-centered outcomes. Through the unprecedented placement of an SCU staff member as Clinical Assistant Professor of Community and Family Medicine alongside the medical team at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, patients with spine-related disorders seen at DHMC benefit from enhanced care options.

USC Course Collaboration

SCU is proud to collaborate with the University of Southern California’s Department of Preventative Medicine to provide an innovative course, entitled “Traditional Eastern Medicine and Modern Medicine.” The required course for 4th year USC pre-med students combines research methodology with Eastern Medicine philosophy—and requires students to visit SCU’s Health System for observation, providing a truly integrative experience for students.

Continuing Education

SCU provides a variety of integrative continuing education opportunities for those in medical professions seeking to expand their skill sets or better understand other medical disciplines such as Ayurveda, acupuncture, chiropractic, nutrition, and more.

Integrative Design for Health Clinic

At SCU’s Health Clinic, all treatment rooms are organized for use by multiple provider types. This allows for a truly integrative approach to patient care, deeper efficiencies in the management of resources, and better time management for patients and practitioners.

Interprofessional Education

At SCU, over 40% of curriculum for most programs involves students learning from, with, and about each other. Students from all programs come together for core science classes giving them an appreciation for other types of medical professions. Once they leave SCU, they are thoroughly prepared to thrive in an ever-changing interprofessional healthcare delivery system.

Faculty Training

As a truly integrative University, SCU places importance on continuous faculty training. A plan for faculty training in interprofessional education is currently in progress. Additionally, leadership deeply engaged with interprofessional organizations as an investment to bring knowledge back to campus.
