Dr. Fanning, DC and Team USA
Prior to the current travel ban due to Covid-19, and the postponement of the Olympics the SCU Sports Medicine faculty was helping USA fencing athletes in their qualifying matches. Dr. Michael Fanning DC, DACBSP, CSCS started March off on a high note by flying home from Budapest, Hungary after providing care for the USA Olympics fencing team athletes. He followed the team to the FIE (Fédération Internationale d’Escrime) International Fe
ncing Federation’s Budapest Grand Prix for both male and female Epee. For many members of the team, this was a crucial match as it served as one of the last qualifying events for the Tokyo Olympic Games as individual fencers.
Working alongside Dr. Joseph Dietrich DC, a former SCU graduate and resident, and Dr. Jeremy Summers DC, the current Director of Sports Medicine at USA Fencing and another fellow SCU graduate, the men were able to provide chiropractic care, soft tissue mobilization, and sideline care. They’ve been traveling with the team, providing sports medicine care for both the male and female epee teams as they participated in numerous other qualifying events prior. Our other residents Dr. Kellen Otte DC, Dr. Peggy Chin DC, and Dr. Tomy Ton DC have also been able to develop a relationship with the USA Fencing team and have plans to participate in future events with the team.
Dr. Fanning doesn’t stop at just making waves overseas, he’s a valuable player in our SCU Health Systems clinics. Acting as a clinician in our Tactical Sports Medicine department, Dr. Fanning works closely with not only athletes but provides tactical care for the local Los Angeles police department. Dr. Fanning, himself, comes from a tactical background and has served six years in the United States Air Force and was deployed on two tours to Dyali and Wasit, Iraq. Upon honorable discharge, he was ranked Staff Sergeant and had specialized as a Joint Terminal Attack Controller, qualifications as a Basic-Parachutist, and received an Associate of Arts in Information Systems from the Community College of the Air Force. However, his accomplishments don’t end there, Dr. Fanning continued to pursue higher education studying Biology at the University of Utah before transferring to the Southern California University of Health Sciences to obtain his DC license in 2016 and finished his residency with the University’s Sports Medicine department in 2018 earning his DACBSP. Upon finishing his residency the University was honored to have him join the faculty team and continues to look forward to what Dr. Fanning will accomplish.
