SCU Students Honor Veterans by Giving Back to the Community
With the goal of showing appreciation for Veterans, two SCU student organizations joined together on Veterans Day to provide service to the homeless men and women on Skid Row.
The Student California Chiropractic Association (SCCA), and the League of Chiropractic Women (LCW) executed a month-long fundraiser gathering money, food, clothing, and women’s hygiene products. Combined, the groups raised over $1,500 in cash and received a significant amount of food and feminine hygiene products from generous donors.
Once donations were collected, the SCCA and LCW organizations teamed up with volunteers to assemble what amounted to more than 700 care packages.
On Veterans Day, volunteers walked the streets surrounding Skid Row carrying boxes of supplies followed by a truck with its bed packed to the brim with goods. As the boxes quickly emptied, students would reload at the truck. “It felt like we were on a U.N. convoy,” said the truck driver, Skyler Alvord.
SCCA Vice President, Shayna Guitare added, “This was my first time handing out donations and it’s awesome. It’s one thing to raise money and make packages, it’s a totally different feeling when you see the people you are helping.”
LCW President, Ginnie Critten, remarked, “We would like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors who helped make our event a success! Thanks to Basketball Beauties, The Pretty Purpose, and Hooters of Hollywood we had a lovely bunch of women helping us impact the lives of hundreds of men and women on Veteran’s Day!”
