SCU President John Scaringe with Dana Goodrich Deane Scholarship award recipients Martha Makonen and Dylan Hernandez. SCU is thrilled to announce that Martha Makonen and Dylan Hernandez are the first recipients of the Dana Goodrich Deane Memorial Scholarship. After a competitive review process, these students were chosen for their passion, academic records, dedication to their communities, and drive to make an impact on the world through patient-centered integrative healthcare practice. The Dana Goodrich Dean Scholarship is part of a generous $1.7 million endowment established by The Goodrich Deane (Richard and Joanne Goodrich and Douglas Deane) family honoring the legacy of SCU Alumnae, Dr. Dana Goodrich Deane, (DC, 1992). Dr. Goodrich Deane, DC was an integrative health practitioner ahead of her time. Like SCU, she envisioned a patient-centered practice that focused on whole person health and active referrals across all healthcare disciplines. The endowment is also supported by SCU funding partner, the Nutri-West Company in memorium of Dr. Paul J. White—with a $12K donation to be dispersed over twelve years. Martha Makonen’s vision is to build an integrative practice specializing pre and postnatal care for women. Her goal is to work closely with OBGYN’s, primary care physicians, and acupuncturists to provide well-rounded care to patients. “The interprofessional education I am receiving at SCU is preparing me to build a patient-oriented practice. I’m learning to be a critical thinker and to be open-minded in considering care options for patients. My goal is to be 100 percent patient-focused,” says Martha. When asked how it feels to be the recipient of the Dana Goodrich Dean Memorial scholarship, Martha remarked “I am so excited! It’s such a great honor to receive the Dana Goodrich Deane scholarship. This generous gift will help me move toward achieving my dreams and goals of becoming an integrative health practitioner. When Dylan Hernandez learned he was the recipient of the scholarship, he was overjoyed. “Receiving this scholarship means the world to me. It means that there are people out there who believe in what we do. There are other people who share my beliefs, and want to further the profession of chiropractic,” he says. Dylan is looking forward to owning an integrative healthcare practice with every practitioner holding the same vision for patient-centered care. Dylan became interested in becoming a chiropractor after being treated by a chiropractor for neck and back pain. “I have an extreme passion for giving people their lives back. My education at SCU has taught me that my actions as a practitioner must align with my patient’s needs.” Congratulations to our scholarship recipients! We are proud of you and honored to call you SCU students.
