For Entrance to the program:
56 units of college-level courses including:
– 3 semester credits Algebra Math (or equivalent)
– 3 semester credits Biology (or equivalent)
– 3 semester credits English
- Minimum GPA of 2.5
Upon completion of the BS in Health Science program, a student will have taken 72 units at SCU (18 classes at 4 units each).
As the BS in Health Science program is a completion program, we do accept transfer units from other regionally-accredited colleges and universities. Students need to come in with a minimum of 56 units, which must include 3 units of math and 3 units of English. There are other graduation requirements for a BS degree (LIST OTHER REQUIREMENTS (history, etc)) that students usually have in their transferring-in 56 units. We also do accept units from our previous ISP and current IoS programs, which may grant a student advanced standing for those classes.
Advanced standing for the BS in Health Science program is based on the college dean’s evaluations of the student’s transcripts and capabilities. Credit will not be allowed for courses in which the applicant has received a grade lower than “C” (or equivalent).
Transfer applicants must follow the general application procedures for the appropriate program listed above. In addition, they must provide official transcripts from each regionally-accredited college or university.
SCUHS welcomes applications from qualified students from other countries. The general admission requirements are identical for all applicants, regardless of citizenship. However, immigration regulations, varying educational backgrounds, and financial considerations require additional procedures. For visa purposes, international students must provide a foreign address in the Application for Admission. International applicants who are admitted to SCUHS will receive a visa information packet along with the acceptance letter from the Office of Admissions. Important visa guidelines are enclosed in this packet.
Certification of Finances
As required by the immigration regulations, international students must show that they have sufficient funds to study in the U.S. There is a Certification of Finances form that you must complete and return to the SCUHS Office of Admissions. The COF is used for financial verification purposes only. The minimum amount of funds required for the 2008-2009 academic year is $32,111 USD (subject to annual increase with tuition) for the Doctor of Chiropractic program, $18,821 USD (subject to annual increase with tuition) for the Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine program, and $33,409 USD (subject to increase with tuition) for the Dual Degree program. Additional funds are required for spouses and dependents.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Test of Spoken English (TSE)
Students applying for admission to the DAOM program must demonstrate English competency. This may be demonstrated with the TOEFL iBT exam. Students taking the TOEFL must pass the iBT exam with an overall score of at least 80 and at least a minimum speaking exam score of 26 and a minimum listening exam score of 22. As an alternative, a student can score a level 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam to demonstrate competency.
The ability to speak, read, and understand English fluently is an important factor in admissions decisions.
Applicants for whom English is not a native language must submit an official copy of their TOEFL score. Photocopies, faxes, and student copies are not acceptable. NOTE: Applicants to the Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine must also submit an official copy of the Test of Spoken English (TSE) or the TOEFL iBT. Testing information on TOEFL or TSE may be obtained at www.toefl.org or by writing to TOEFL, Box 899, Princeton, NJ 08504. SCUHS does not grant exemptions to the TOEFL or TSE requirement, regardless of an applicant’s citizenship status in the U.S., or study at another university or college taught in English.
All applicants for whom English is not their native language will be considered for a program of study in accordance with their TOEFL/TSE score(s). Applicants will not be admitted without an official score on file.
For all degree programs, the minimum required TOEFL score is 500 (paper based), 173 (computer based), or 61 (internet based).
Health Insurance and Other Documents (TSE)
All international students must submit proof of valid and unexpired health insurance acceptable in the United States. Furthermore, all international students must submit a copy of our valid passport, including name, date of birth, passport number, expiration date, photo, and signature. The SCUHS Office of Admissions will evaluate your information and issue an I-20 form. You will present your I-20 form along with other supporting documents to the U.S. Embassy/Consulate in your country and apply for an F-1 visa. Note that lengthy visa processing should be anticipated due to the new immigration regulations effective January 2003. International applicants are considered for SCUHS scholarships. All scholarship decisions are made independent of the Certification of Finances (COF). Scholarships can be incorporated into the COF.
