Bachelor of Science in Health Science

Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS) – Online Degree Completion

SCU student studyingSCU’s online bachelor’s completion degree in health sciences (pending WSCUC approval) is a dynamic degree covering the most current and relevant issues in healthcare today (biomedical science, integrative health, health education and human genomics). The BSHS provides students a pathway to pursue various healthcare careers such as health education, public health, chiropractic, acupuncture, medicine, physician assistant, human genomics, physical therapy, occupational therapy, dentistry, or epidemiology. Students learn the values and interpersonal skills needed to succeed in today’s health settings through a deep exploration of biomedical sciences, integrative health, health education and human genomics. SCU’s BSHS offers four concentrations; Health Education, Human Genetics & Genomics, Chiropractic Sciences, and Eastern Medicine. Three of those concentrations also provide accelerated pathways to graduate education at SCU that saves a student time and money while leading to a Doctor of Chiropractic, Doctor/Master of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, or a Master of Science degree in Human Genetics and Genomics.

Program Options – Areas of Emphasis

The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree has four concentrations and three accelerated pathways to choose from. The concentrations take place in the last term of the program and based on a student’s selection will impact whether they need to be on the SCU campus.

Concentrations

Health Education (online) The Health Education concentration, which consists of four courses (12 credits), prepares students to collect and analyze data to identify community needs prior to planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating programs designed to encourage healthy lifestyles, policies, and environments. Students who complete this concentration will be prepared to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®) examination from the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC) and, upon passing, will be awarded the title Certified Health Education Specialist. Human Genetics and Genomics (online) The Human Genetics and Genomics concentration, which consists of four courses (12 credits), provides students with an introduction to the principles of human heredity in health and disease with an emphasis on clinical applications. Chiropractic Sciences (on-campus) The Chiropractic Sciences concentration, which consists of four courses (12 credits), focuses on the basic sciences to provide an introductory understanding how the body is organized on a cellular, tissue, and organ level, along with regional interrelationships. Chiropractic procedures and theories are covered providing students an excellent introduction to methods and benefits. The last 12 credits of the BSHS program are the same as the first 12 credits of the DC program. Students will be required to take the last 12 credits on the SCU campus (subject to state and local guidelines related to COVID-19). This concentration is only available on-campus. Eastern Medicine (on-campus) The Eastern Medicine concentration, which consists of four courses (12 credits), provides students with an introduction to acupuncture and meridians, Chinese herbology, and Eastern medicine theory. It also provides an introduction to basic sciences, establishing a wide-ranging and comprehensive foundation of the body’s organization on a cellular, tissue, and organ level, along with regional interrelationships. The last 12 credits of the BSHS program are the same as the first 12 credits of the MACM/DACM program. Students will be required to take the last 12 credits on the SCU campus (subject to state and local guidelines related to COVID-19). This concentration is only available on-campus.

Accelerated Pathways – Saving Students Both Time and Money

Three of the concentrations also provide students with the option to continue their education by applying their earned concentration credits towards a Master or Doctoral degree. Chiropractic Sciences (on-campus) The Chiropractic Sciences concentration provides students an accelerated pathway into the Doctor of Chiropractic program. This is done by having the BSHS and Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) program share courses saving students both time and money. The last term (12 credits) of the BSHS program are the same as the first term (12 credits) of the DC program. Students will be required to take the last 12 credits on the SCU campus (subject to state and local guidelines related to COVID-19) and, upon graduation, can elect to apply their concentration credits directly into the DC program. Accelerated pathway students will be required to apply to the DC program. Eastern Medicine (on-campus) The Eastern Medicine concentration provides students an accelerated pathway into the Masters of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine (MACM) or the Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine (DACM) program by having the BSHS and Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine programs share courses. The last term (12 credits) of the BSHS program are the same as the first term (12 credits) of the MACM/DACM program. Students will be required to take the last 12 credits on the SCU campus (subject to state and local guidelines related to COVID-19) and, upon graduation, can elect to apply their concentration credits directly into the MACM/DACM program. Accelerated pathway students will be required to apply to the MACM/DACM program. Human Genetics and Genomics (online) The Human Genetics and Genomics concentration is designed to provide students an accelerated pathway into the Masters of Science in Human Genetics and Genomics (MSHGG) by having the BSHS and MSHGG programs share courses. The last term (12 credits) of the BSHS program are the same as the first term (12 credits) of the MSHGG program. Upon graduation students may elect to continue and apply their concentration credits directly into the MSHGG program. Accelerated pathway students will be required to apply to the MSHGG program.
