DACM Admissions Requirements
Prerequisites for the DACM Program:
- Completed application
- Completed a high school diploma or equivalent and must have at least three years (90 semester units or 135 quarter units) of education from a U.S. accredited college or university (or international equivalent)
- GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 grade scale
- Specific courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Psychology may be submitted prior to admission or taken as co-requisite while enrolled in the DACM program at SCU and must be successfully completed according to the completion schedules
- Personal statement
- English competency
Transfer status is available to applicants accepted into the Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and the Master of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine program. As per ACAOM requirements, applicants may receive transfer credit for up to 50% of the total program credit requirements. Of that 50%, no more than 25% of the program clinical training requirements may be accepted as transfer credit.
Advanced standing for the Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and the Master of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine program is based on the evaluations of the student’s transcripts and capabilities, and if necessary, by placement exams which are administered after acceptance. Credit will not be allowed for courses in which the applicant has received a grade lower than “C” (or equivalent).
Transfer applicants must follow the general application procedures for the appropriate program listed above. In addition, they must provide official transcripts from each professional program attended. Students may be requested to provide a letter of good standing from the professional program from which they wish to transfer.
SCUHS welcomes applications from qualified students from other countries. The general admission requirements are identical for all applicants, regardless of citizenship. However, immigration regulations, varying educational backgrounds, and financial considerations require additional procedures. For visa purposes, international students must provide a foreign address in the Application for Admission. International applicants who are admitted to SCUHS will receive a visa information packet along with the acceptance letter from the Office of Admissions. Important visa guidelines are enclosed in this packet.
Certification of Finances
As required by the immigration regulations, international students must show that they have sufficient funds to study in the U.S. There is a Certification of Finances form that you must complete and return to the SCU Office of Admissions. The COF is used for financial verification purposes only. The minimum amount of funds required for the 2019-2020 academic year is $32,111 USD (subject to annual increase with tuition) for the Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine program, $18,821 USD (subject to annual increase with tuition) for the Master of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine program. Additional funds are required for spouses and dependents.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Test of Spoken English (TSE)
Students applying for admission to the DACM program must demonstrate English competency by meeting one of the following:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-Based Test acceptable scores: TOEFL iBT acceptable score – 80 and TOEFL iBT speaking score – 26
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) acceptable scores: IELTS overall band score 6.5 (Academic Format) and IELTS spoken band score – 8.0
- Completed a two-year (60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) baccalaureate or graduate level, English-based education in an institution:
- Accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education
- In the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada (except Quebec), New Zealand, or Ireland. In all cases, English must have been both the language of instruction and the curriculum used.
The ability to speak, read, and understand English fluently is an important factor in admissions decisions.
Applicants for whom English is not a native language must submit an official copy of their TOEFL score. Photocopies, faxes, and student copies are not acceptable. NOTE: Applicants to the Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine must also submit an official copy of the Test of Spoken English (TSE) or the TOEFL iBT. Testing information on TOEFL or TSE may be obtained at www.toefl.org or by writing to TOEFL, Box 899, Princeton, NJ 08504. SCUHS does not grant exemptions to the TOEFL or TSE requirement, regardless of an applicant’s citizenship status in the U.S., or study at another university or college taught in English.
All applicants for whom English is not their native language will be considered for a program of study in accordance with their TOEFL/TSE score(s). Applicants will not be admitted without an official score on file.
Health Insurance and Other Documents (TSE)
All international students must submit proof of valid and unexpired health insurance acceptable in the United States. Furthermore, all international students must submit a copy of our valid passport, including name, date of birth, passport number, expiration date, photo, and signature. The SCU Office of Admissions will evaluate your information and issue an I-20 form. You will present your I-20 form along with other supporting documents to the U.S. Embassy/Consulate in your country and apply for an F-1 visa. Note that lengthy visa processing should be anticipated due to current immigration regulations. It is important that you allow yourself enough time (at least 4 weeks) to apply for the visa. International applicants are considered for SCU scholarships. All scholarship decisions are made independent of the Certification of Finances (COF). Scholarships can be incorporated into the COF.
