Kwan Family Gives $500,000 in Support of Southern California University of Health Sciences Vision of Redefining Healthcare

The Kwan family (Dr. Stephen Kwan and Mrs. Alice Kwan) donated $500,000 to Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU) demonstrating a strong commitment to SCU’s mission of redefining healthcare and healthcare education. The donation will fund The Kwan Care and Love Scholarship, which will provide assistance to exceptional students entering the university’s College of Eastern Medicine. Dr. Stephen Kwan and Mrs. Alice Kwan presenting their donation to Dr. Scaringe The Kwan Care and Love Scholarship has two significant outcomes:
  1. Creates a Path for Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner Education – the transformative scholarship will provide a minimum of 50 percent tuition assistance to deserving students entering SCU’s College of Eastern Medicine. The groundbreaking scholarship provides access to those who might not otherwise have had the opportunity to pursue careers as Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners due to federal loan limits and the burden of student debt.
  2. Allows Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners to Learn at an Optimal Level – scholarship recipients will be granted a paid trip to Shandong, China—where they will participate in an externship, learning directly from master Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners in a healthcare model that embraces their contribution to patient health.
The Kwan family first became interested in contributing to SCU after learning of the university’s aim to promote Traditional Chinese Medicine education in the United States. While Dr. Stephen Kwan, a respected cardiologist, does not practice Traditional Chinese Medicine, he has a strong interest in its philosophy of whole person health. Mrs. Kwan, a successful real estate professional, has a growing interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine. They both strongly believe in giving back and awarding academic excellence. Before visiting SCU, the Kwan Family was under the impression that SCU only offered Traditional Chinese Medicine educational opportunities. After touring the campus, and meeting with students, faculty, and staff—Dr. and Mrs. Kwan were surprised to learn of SCU’s unique integrative healthcare educational model that bridges Eastern and Western medicine. Dr. Kwan described the university’s vision for redefining healthcare and healthcare education as “impressive and unique.” Inspired by SCU’s work, the Kwan family made a commitment to partner with the university in carrying out its vision for the College of Eastern Medicine. Dr. and Mrs. Kwan stated, “Changing healthcare means changing how students entering health professions are educated. We are honored that we can help lead this change with SCU.” Dr. John Scaringe added, “We are extremely grateful for the generous support of the Kwan family. By creating a direct pathway for students to become Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners—the Kwan family is taking an active leadership role in transforming healthcare.”
