Reinventing Yourself
~By Dennis Buckley, Doctor of Chiropractic
Each year software companies update their programs with a new, improved version. They gather feedback and analyze the program and reprogram it to meet the demands of the customers and the marketplace.
Come January most people take an inventory and make “New Year†resolutions about things they want to change. Each year, or on a regular basis, we need to reinvent ourselves; Reprogram the system to achieve our goals.
Within each of us is a need to live a life of meaning, of contribution. To live, to love, to learn and to leave a legacy is a broad framework for a well lived life. This touches the four main areas that need to be addressed in our search for improvement.
To live, refers to the body and the need to survive. The body is the instrument of the mind, heart and soul. Through exercise, nutrition and management of energy in activities,  the body is able to perform optimally. To learn refers to the mind and the quest for knowledge and development. To love refers to our relationships and our social, emotional development. To leave a legacy is our need to contribute and bring meaning to our lives.
In the whole person paradigm, all four areas need to be addressed, reviewed, and reprogrammed. All four interact. Neglecting one area impacts the other. Addressing each area can positively influence the other areas. The body is usually a good place to start.
Installing new habits is not all that difficult. Replacing the old habits is the challenge. It is normal when you make the change, start exercising, eating better, that a challenge shows up almost immediately. You injure yourself exercising or “opportunities†to vary from your new eating plan manifest. It’s as if the universe is testing you to see if you are really serious about making changes. When challenges pop up, we tend to run the old program that we are trying to replace.
At the intersection of knowledge, skill, and attitude is habit. By exercising your power of choice, the gap between stimulus and response, you choose your thoughts. Your thoughts then cause your feelings which can activate your body’s action. Your actions determine the conditions, circumstances, and experience of your life.
In regards to the body’s health, if you want the conditions, the circumstances, and experience of your health to change, start with reinventing yourself by the choices you make in regards to health.
Change is immediate, the results come later. You have the power.
