Why Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine?

Up until a few years ago, oriental medicine was a mysterious science to those living in the western world. But, for over 2,000 years, it has been developed, adapted and modified to meet the health care needs of millions. With today’s technology, openness to alternative medicines and confirmation of positive outcomes, oriental medicine is taking its rightful place in a multidisciplinary approach to primary health care.

Simply stated, oriental medicine is based on balancing the body’s positive energy. The science is made up of a myriad of therapies, including acupuncture, herbal and nutritional therapy, Tui-Na/massage, acupressure, meditation and physical exercise. Acupuncture is utilized to keep the normal flow of the body’s energy, between its surface and internal organs, unblocked – thereby restoring physical and mental health.

Curriculum

A solid balance of lecture and lab hours provides students with the knowledge and skills required to enter the clinical phase of their education with confidence and enthusiasm.

The Preclinical Education Division’s departments include Medical Terminology/History Taking, History of Medicine, Anatomy/Physiology, Pathology, Western Nutrition, Pharmacology and Fundamental Radiology.  Southern California University of Health Sciences is recognized for its excellence in the basic sciences, a clear advantage over other institutions offering programs in acupuncture and oriental medicine.

Included in the Division of Oriental Medicine is Oriental Medicine Principles and Practice, Acupuncture, Herbology, Tui-Na/Massage, Qi Giong and Tai Ji.

The Clinical Sciences Division of the College offers a Department of Diagnosis – providing instruction for Physical Examination, Neuromusculoskeletal Examination, Laboratory Diagnosis, Clinical Science/Medicine, and Emergency Procedures. A Research Division offers Research Methodology, while the Division of Clinical Internship allows students to enhance their acquired skills through observation, supervised practice and independent activities.

The Campus

Located on a 38-acre tree-lined campus in residential Whittier, California – on the border of Los Angeles County and Orange County – the College is at the center of today’s alternative health care movement. In addition, it’s surrounded by an unequalled Southern California atmosphere – close to both mountain resorts and beaches that exemplify a unique lifestyle.

Students at Southern California University of Health Sciences enjoy rich learning surroundings, including classrooms with state-of-the-art audio/visual and computer-assisted learning resources. The Seabury Learning Resource Center and Anatomy Lab have recently undergone a significant renovation to further improve their services to students.

A modern health center is conveniently located on campus to provide the colleges’ interns with a valuable clinical experience. Add to that other campus features, such as the Chesney Student Center, gymnasium with weight room, playing fields, professional track plus volleyball, basketball and tennis courts – and you have a facility created to make the most of a student’s educational and leisure time.

Leadership

Leading the program is Wen-Shuo Wu, MSOM, MPH, L.Ac.  He has created a curriculum and clinical experience for students like no other in the country. He received his medical degree from China Medical College, his master’s in public health from UCLA and a master’s in acupuncture and oriental medicine from South Baylo University. He has served in the academic profession as both a professor and academic dean.
