The MSN program, with a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialization, has the overall goal of preparing competent and caring nurses to practice as FNPs in diverse settings and provide care for patients of all ages.
FNPs provide primary healthcare to infants, children, and adults in a wide range of settings such as health maintenance organizations, hospitals, primary care clinics, schools, community health centers, workplaces, and homes.
FNPs perform physical exams; diagnose and treat common acute illnesses and injuries; provide immunizations; manage high blood pressure, diabetes, and other chronic problems; order and interpret X-rays and other lab tests; prescribe drugs and other therapies; and counsel patients on disease prevention and healthcare options.

This new program will launch once approval of SCUHS’s accrediting agency, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), has been received.
The program will be offered primarily online. There will be two on campus sessions during the program, and preceptored clinical experiences are arranged in areas where students live and work.
